Drew was interviewed on RTE Radio One this morning about his dearly departed award winning beard where he revealed that before last year it had been shaved only once in his entire life and that was at Luke Kelly s wake in January . He then went on to reveal that nobody outside his cl! ose friends had found out about the shaving because as the wake had lasted days by the time it was over the beard had grown back completely. The year old singer also told listeners that Luke Kelly s wake was actually entered in the Guinness Book of Records for being the longest ever recorded wake in the whole world. He spoke candidly Luke died on the Monday and I arrived at the wake on the Tuesday night that was the st of January and we didn t finish up until Sunday th of March. I tell yeh I ve never seen so much coddle ate in me whole life everyone there was making their own recipes. There was brown coddles white coddles hot coddles cold coddles Christy Moore even made a black coddle Someone told me later that some of the ingredients were Guinness and heroin I didn t mind though it was lovely Some fucker put onions in one coddle which is just wrong and had Luke been alive I m tellin yeh he would ve battered the eejit. Of course there was a lot of bad blood between the diff! erent IRA factions back then he continued but they all called a ceasefire during the mourning period. It was beautiful and we all appreciated it. We also arranged for Guinesses to just send a delivery truck to the house so we had to get a temporary alcohol license for the gaff. I couldn t get over the organising that went into it. Drew explained how on the first night while in a drunken stupor his beard was cut off by some boisterous friends and he described how on awaking he was unable to recognize the face that looked back at him in the mirror I had that beard since I was so I didn t know what me face looked like as a grown man I couldn t believe the way I looked. The lads told me to grow it back or else I d have to leave the band. So while I was waiting for the beard to grow back I had to wrap me face in an Arran jumper. The wake only came to an end after neighbours began to complain about the smell of Kelly s rotting corpse in the front bedroom. When we did finally bury him said Ronnie there wasn t much left of him to be honest we were all! too polluted to notice the smell.
