The Bee Gees are to be honoured for their contribution to pop music with the unveiling of a special plaque in London. Brothers Barry Robin and Maurice Gibb were one of the biggest acts of the s and won multiple Grammy Awards during their year career. The tribute is the latest in a long line of green plaques celebrating the achievements of some of Westminster s most famous former residents including Oscar Wilde TS Eliot and Jane Austen. Robin Gibb is due to unveil the plaque on the facade of Brook Street the former Mayfair home of the band s manager and producer Robert Stigwood where the trio spent much of their time rehearsing and composing songs between and . BP Despite what many in the mainstream media say a majority of Americans and an even larger majority of religiously affiliated citizens don t believe that Christians are too involved in politics a new poll shows. Over half of all Americans surveyed percent disagreed with the statement I am concerned that at times Christians are too involved in politics accordin! g to a survey conducted through a joint project of LifeWay Research and the Southern Baptist Convention s Ethics Religious Liberty Commission. Ed Stetzer director of LifeWay Research in Nashville said that when it comes to sharing the Gospel and also being engaged with public policy Christians can do both. I t is . both and not either or he said. You cannot stand for justice and be told you cannot speak of Jesus nor can you love God and His word and not care for unborn children the abused and social justice. The findings released May challenge the assertion of secularists who say that Americans religious beliefs should be purely a private matter and should be somehow segregated from weighty discussions of social issues and public policy. Forty four percent of Americans agreed percent strongly and percent somewhat with the assertion that Christians were often too embroiled in politics. When researchers asked those who attend religious services of any type at least weekly rej! ection of the premise was even greater percent of those polled indicated a high degree of comfort with the notion of Christians being involved in politics. Only one in five percent either said they strongly agreed or somewhat agreed with the contention that Christians are too engaged politically. Americans who described themselves as born again evangelical or fundamentalist including Southern Baptist respondents expressed the highest degree of disapproval percent with the statement that at times Christians are too involved in politics with just over a quarter percent of these individuals telling researchers they agreed strongly or somewhat with the statement. Most Southern Baptist pastors percent surveyed indicated their disagreement with a claim that believers are too involved in politics with percent somewhat disagreeing and percent strongly disagreeing. Only eight percent of Southern Baptists pastors surveyed agreed strongly with the statement that Christians are too involved in politics with percent saying they somewhat agreed. These resul! ts do not surprise me at all said Richard Land president of the Ethics Religious Liberty Commission. They underscore and reinforce the feedback I get on a consistent basis from grassroots Christians of all perspectives. The survey results are very much in line with the involvement of people of faith throughout our nation s history with political issues that have a moral component Land added. Perhaps the most dramatic examples of religiously motivated movements generated in reaction to grave social injustice are the abolitionist movement against human bondage and the civil rights movement in opposition to segregation and racial injustice. The abolitionist and the civil rights movements are not explicable or comprehensible apart from the religiously motivated outrage that created them the religious leaders who led them and the religious supporters who made possible their eventual triumph. Warning there may be a temptation for some Christians to craft an informal alliance with! a single political party Stetzer said Christians need to speak prophetically to all parties not be beholden to one. If evangelicals are seen as a voting bloc of the Republican Party I am concerned. If Christians are told to leave their faith outside the public square I am more concerned. Land added that people of faith have an obligation to be involved in the process and to do so in a principled issue oriented fashion. We should be voting our values beliefs and convictions based upon our understanding of the imperatives of our faith he said. Yet there is a balance to be considered when one s faith is brought into the political arena Stetzer said adding As evangelicals we need to not try to moralize the unconverted. Microsoft chasing Apple adds TV shows to Zune Marketplace San Francisco Chronicle

Microsoft Corp. said late Monday it will now sell TV shows including popular NBC series on the Zune Marketplace a move that brings its selection of content for the digital media player a step closer to what Apple Inc. s iTunes offers for Apple s much more popular iPod. Redmond Wash. based Microsoft said it also planned to send out software updates overnight that add new features to the Zune devices and the PC software used to buy and manage digital content. Microsoft ventured into downloadable video sales for Zunes last October when it released its second generation players and software but the content was limited to music videos. Starting Tuesday Microsoft will sell episodes of TV shows including Comedy Central s South Park and Sci Fi Channel s Battlestar Galactica for . each. In a small victory over Apple Microsoft said the Zune Marketplace will also carry NBC shows including The Office and Heroes. NBC Universal has said it pulled its shows from iTunes over Apple s unwilli! ngness to set different prices for TV shows. Microsoft spokesman Jason Reindorp said flexible pricing is within the scope of its agreement with NBC but that there are no concrete plans. The software maker still has a lot of work to do to catch Apple. Since the first Zune went on sale in November the software maker has sold just north of million of the devices Reindorp said. It doesn t seem that a Yahoo Google mating on advertising would lead to a friendly Microsoft Yahoo discussion this weekend. It s an interesting game of chicken with many issues such as regulatory approval up in the air for any permutation of a deal with the triangle. It s clear that Yahoo and Google are trying to check Microsoft by hooking up but it would only be strategic for Yahoo if Microsoft ends up paying a higher price meaning it has to motivate Steve Ballmer into coming up with more cash. Of course Ballmer has oth! er options. He could take the hostile takeover route or walk away for now and perhaps come back later if Yahoo goes into freefall even with Google filling its coffers. Federal court will determine ASCAP fees for music on AOL Yahoo CNET News

A federal district court in New York ruled Wednesday that the American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers is owed reasonable license fees by online media powerhouses AOL RealNetworks and Yahoo for the music streamed and distributed on their sites. Currently music streamed by sites owned by the three companies is advertising supported and no dividends are paid to ASCAP. The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York will now determine appropriate fees for AOL RealNetworks and Yahoo all of which have applied for ASCAP licenses but have not been able to agree upon fees. The total payments to the group which represents over songwriters composers and music publishers not record labels could reach million. Click here for a PDF of the court s decision . The license fees would cover music distributed as early as July and then up through the end of . Because songwriters and composers often aren t affiliated with record labels that distribute their music as per! formed by another artist they presently are left without licensing fees from digital distribution on the three companies named in the court decision. ASCAP President Marilyn Bergman wrote in a statement following the decision The court s finding represents a major step toward proper valuation of the music contributions of songwriters composers and publishers to these types of online businesses. It is critical that these organizations share a reasonable portion of their sizable revenues with those of us whose content attracts audiences and ultimately helps to make their businesses viable. This decision will go a long way toward protecting the ability of songwriters and composers to be compensated fairly as the use of musical works online continues to grow. More details to follow.
