Customer Reviews Super Reader by Blue Tyson As it turns out I had read this just didn t remember the author. A bloke working in an eclectic bookshop follows the wrong woman off the train and ends up in Mysterie. Angels a low rent version of Thor Luna Gaia Nichols Hob the Serpent s So! n and others are there to help and bedevil him. A few names dropped from the Nightside too it seems along with Hob. Basically he becomes an important mortal element in a struggle between Powers and Dominations as Green likes to call them. Not up to par with the Nightside novels by Catfish Kozmo I have to say that I ve read lots of the stuff by Simon Green but this one was just not up to snuff. Unfortunately I found myself getting bored with this one as the pacing is really slow until you re way through the book. I thought it was still a fun read but it s just off. It seems like this was the transitional novel to get to the Nightside series. Some of the descriptions of the characters living in the other world become more fleshed out ideas in Nightside. It s a decent read but I wouldn t be in too much of a rush. A lot of fun to read by Corina Laraway For those looking for heavier urban fantasy please pick up Gaiman s Neverwhere which will sit more like a heavy meat and potato! es meal to the reader. This is a lighthearted thought provoking creamy and zippy concoction that is more like a light summer entree rather than a heavy winter meal. I loved Something from the Nightside so much I grabbed up all the Simon R. Green I could find and so far my small library doesn t carry much but I did find this book there. It was a blast My husband zipped through it then my best friend and they wouldn t leave me alone until I had read it also all within days of me checking it out. I enjoy most of the characters Luna is particularly memorable and I did not find it pat or cutesy at all. There are cute parts and lots of parts that had all of us laughing aloud which really makes me want to own all this man s books but there is a lot to roll around your thoughts once you put the book down as well. Especially as a budding novelist If you want intellectually heavy go somewhere else. This may not be for you. I am an English teacher and not by any means an intellectual pygmy I can read and understand heavy prose and epic poetry and write i! ntelligent essays critiquing them. But when you want something to make you smile laugh and think thoughts that take you out of your everyday rut I d recommend Simon R. Green for the majority of people especially for my friends and family. Not Ripe Yet Still a Bit Green by Sires I like Green s baroque visual imagination his description of Angel would probably cause Lovecraft to chew up a copy of his Collected Works in envy. Not a squamous or rugous part in sight. But once Green has created these imaginative creatures he is not sure what to do with them other than have them pound someone into the ground or be pounded into the ground by another character. The frame work of this book is familiar think A Fish Dinner in Memizon by E. R. Eddison and all of the other more modern authors mentioned by the other reviewers and Green draws on British legend and history in a way that is vaguely reminiscent of a lot of British writers. But the mind does tend to wonder a bit between acts o! f mayhem. And isn t the conclusion just a bit too pat No matter this one is worth a read and maybe if you are intrigued there is a whole world of British fantasy to explore that is not LotR or Harry Potter. Aikman Expects Favre To Have Second Thoughts CBS 2 Chicago

Troy Aikman says it s a sure thing Brett Favre will have second thoughts about hanging up his helmet. The Hall of Fame quarterback knows how hard it is to walk away from the NFL and never look back. Even after a series of concussions led Aikman to retire from the Dallas Cowboys after the season he was tempted to come back two years later. I was ready to go and had talked with my wife and everything about it Aikman told The Associated Press by phone. Aikman figures Favre will feel the same pull the closer the season gets. And he wouldn t be surprised if Favre changes his mind and sends heir apparent Aaron Rodgers back to the bench. You want to walk out on top said Aikman now an analyst for Fox Sports. But at the same time you re walking away from something you really enjoy. Favre told the Green Bay Packers he was retiring Tuesday but hasn t addressed the media beyond a brief voice mail to ESPN s Chris Mortensen citing fatigue. Favre is to discuss his decision at a news confer! ence Thursday in Green Bay. Aikman is looking forward to hearing the three time MVP fully explain his decision. He wonders if Favre will give himself any wiggle room similar to Michael Jordan s famous assertion that he was . percent sure he was done playing after retiring from the Chicago Bulls in . Jordan of course came back to play for the Washington Wizards. Aikman isn t the only one who expects Favre to question his decision. I think he ll definitely have second thoughts knowing him former Green Bay Packers coach Mike Sherman said. He s a creature of habit. Favre even broached the subject in his conversations with Packers coach Mike McCarthy on Monday night when he first brought up his intention to retire. We talked about the reality that he ll experience McCarthy said. And he was telling me about the conversation he d shared with a family member about when the games start in the fall it s going to probably hit him the hardest. But as far as McCarthy is concerned Favre ! wasn t waffling. I would say that s all speculation McCarthy said. Not based on the conversations I ve had with Brett. Packers general manager Ted Thompson said Favre seemed at peace with his decision when he made it final in a conversation with Thompson on Tuesday morning. But as I ve also said it s a very complicated decision process that he has go to through on this Thompson said. I guess you never say never but I wouldn t anticipate that. Aikman knows firsthand that retirement isn t necessarily permanent. He fully intended to return to the NFL two years after he retired from the Cowboys only to have his prospective new team he won t say which one pull the plug on the deal at the last minute. They were hesitant for whatever reason whether it be the health issue the concussions or how it would be perceived publicly Aikman said. All things considered Aikman said it was just as well. I was glad it didn t work out in hindsight he said. The team didn t have as good a year as I expected. And perhaps Favre is better off retiring too. When you star! t giving this much thought to retirement I think that is a pretty good indicator that it s time Aikman said. Sherman now the coach at Texas A M figures Favre will struggle to stay away from football but eventually will settle into a new routine. Once he makes it through that first year he ll be OK after that Sherman said. But what if he doesn t make it that far Packers chairman emeritus Bob Harlan said somebody would find a place for him if Favre called the Packers in July saying he wanted to play. But Harlan doesn t expect that to happen. I would assume he s given this a lot of thought and I ve always felt wife Deanna would have a lot to say about it when the time came Harlan said. Harlan said it would be a shame to see Favre try a halfhearted comeback similar to that of late Packers defensive end Reggie White. He actually retired three times once briefly before the season once after he changed his mind and played for the Packers in and then for good after one unremarkable! season with Carolina in . We ve always seen a lot of great great athletes who decide to try that one more year and it s a disappointment Harlan said. I ve always felt badly that Reggie came back and played that year at Carolina because he wasn t the same Reggie White. And I think it d be very sad to see that this wasn t the same Brett Favre. Lee and I will be here at Disneyland for the first weekend of the Festival we are spending two nights at the Grand Californian and I will be attempting to submit daily blog entries while we are here. Disney certainly got a gorgeous weekend for their Festival though a little warmer than they would like I think. It was supposed to be to! day Friday though I m not sure it was quite that warm. Still when you were standing in full sun waiting in line for an event it was very warm There was a nice breeze though. So.what s new with the Festival this year A lot actually. As I mentioned it s daily this year with complimentary cooking demos and wine and beer tasting each day. More on the weekends of course. They have new venues this year in addition to the Golden Vine Winery and Pacific Wharf areas they ve used the last two years they have also expanded into the Bountiful Farm area with a new larger demonstration kitchen area there which seats people. The Jr. Chef program has relocated there also. The upper terrace of the Golden Vine Winery formerly a demonstration kitchen is now the Sparkling Bar where they serve flights of wines as well as tapas like cheese platters bruschetta and flatbread. The demonstration kitchen in the Pacific Wharf area has also been expanded and seats people. The Festival Welcome Center ha! s been relocated to Sunshine Plaza. One really great in my opinion addition this year all of the counter service restaurants in DCA with the exception of Burger Invasion are offering special food and or beverage items during the Festival. One of my complaints in the past has been that there just isn t a lot of variety in the Festival food items and that with Festival foods served just at the Lucky Fortune Cookery that you can t wander around and eat. This goes a long way to helping with that Though these food items are full size orders and not appetizer sized so unless you re sharing with a group it s hard to try too many of them in a day. Anyway.the food items are themed to the restaurant serving them and for the most part they look really wonderful to me. Farmer s Market has a California Wrap Award Wieners has the Portabello Philly yes made with mushrooms no meat Cocina Cucamonga offers Bunuelo Fritters Pacific Wharf Cafe is serving a Chinese Chicken Salad in a bread bowl there s a Gourmet Cheese Corn Dog at Corn Dog Castle and Pizza Oom Mow! Mow has a Chilled Shrimp Pasta Salad . Taste Pilot s Grill is only offering an additional wine and beer as far as I can tell. A number of these offerings are healthier lighter fare than the normal theme park foods but yet they sound delicious. Lee and I tried the California Wrap which is a spinach tortilla filled with marinated chicken mandarin oranges sliced red flame grapes apricots cilantro and baby spinach with a light honey low fat yogurt dressing. It was quite tasty though a bit heavy on the cilantro for my taste since I really don t like cilantro. The Lucky Fortune Cookery is still serving appetizer sized offerings for the Festival but I don t think there are as many selections this year. I m running out of time so more on those later this weekend. Another thing that s new this year.crowds Even the first events on Friday were at capacity and of the people we talked to in line most had come because of the Festival not a lot of people just walked up and participated. ! All of the events we attended today Delicious Desserts and BBQ cooking demos and Flora Springs and Rosenthal the Malibu Estate wine tastings were turning people away. You were ok if you got in line at least minutes in advance.but I ll bet that won t be true tomorrow Marinated BBQ Pork on Rice Cake wrapped with English Cucumber While we were wandering around the Festival today we ran into Jim Ames Producer of the Festival who of course is busy busy busy but took several minutes to chat with us. He gave me the menu for Taste I will get that on line after I get home and told us who the entertainment will be for Taste this year jazz guitarist and two time Grammy winner Paul Brown accompanied by a band led by the guy who leads the band on Dancing with the Stars. If I watched the show I might know who that was but I don t. Anyway.it will be quite a different experience from Barrage last year. Flora Springs Winetasting Tonight we attended the Winemaker Dinner at Steakhouse featuring the wines of Chappellet Winery . Dinner was quite good especially th! e dessert goat cheese cheesecake and Valhrona Chocolate Pate. The latter was especially good. I ll have more on that later too. It ll be a busy day tomorrow starting off with early entry at Disneyland where hopefully Lee will finally get a chance to ride the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage . I ll write more as I have time. Yahoo goes OpenSocial Microsoft preaches data portability Social media news is all the rage today as Yahoo signed on with Google and MySpace for the OpenSocial initiative while Microsoft and partners Facebook and Bebo tout contact data portability. The OpenSocial news is more of a feel good story today as Yahoo and Google both boosted the opening of the OpenSocial Foundation as an open community governed specification for building social applications across the web. Here s the essential bit about OpenSocial OpenSocial addresses an emerging problem for developers who are eagerly building applications people can enjoy with their friends before OpenSocial if a developer built a favorite photos application to work on one social network it would have to be built all over again to work on another site. OpenSocial tackles this problem at its technology roots providing common plumbing that lets social applications run on many different websites without requiring duplicate work from ! either developers or the websites. Kind of sounds like write once run anywhere doesn t it I guess no one s ever heard of Java. Actually considering how people have chafed over Sun s stewardship of Java over the years maybe we ll see Google s Dalvik figure in the application development process. Like kids on the playground Microsoft has chosen sides in social networking but they aren t worried about applications. Instead they opted to focus on the mildly contentious issue of data portability which we see as much more interesting right now than OpenSocial. Microsoft s John Richards called it putting users at the center of their data To tackle the issue of contact data portability it is important to reconcile the larger issue of data ownership. Who owns the data like email addresses in a Windows Live Hotmail address book We firmly believe that we are simply stewards of customers data and that customers should be able to choose how they control and share their data. We think cu! stomers should be able to share their data in the most safe and secure way possible but historically this openness has been achieved largely through a mechanism called screen scraping which unduly puts customers at risk for phishing attacks identity fraud and spam. Now with the Windows Live Contacts API we have provided an alternative to screen scraping that is equally open but unequivocally safer and more secure for customers. Facebook and Bebo will be the first sites to make data available to the Windows Live Contacts API with support for LinkedIn Tagged and Hi coming soon.
